Dr. Athanasios G. Papavassiliou (born in 1961) is Professor of Biochemistry and Head of the Department of Biological Chemistry, Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece. He received his M.D. from the School of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (1984; 'Valedictorian') and his Ph.D. in Cellular, Molecular, and Biophysical Studies from Columbia University, New York, NY, USA (1989; 'Summa Cum Laude'). He had postdoctoral training at the Department of Microbiology, College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University and at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Heidelberg, Germany (1989-1991), where he then served as Staff Scientist (faculty position; 1991-1996). He has also authored 15 chapters in international biomedical books/monographs, and served as Guest Editor of 3 journal thematic issues and Invited Editor of 2 international biomedical books/monographs. He serves/has served as Editor or Editorial Board member of 54 peer-reviewed biomedical journals, reviewer for 187 biomedical journals and evaluator of various national and international research programs/proposals. He is the recipient of numerous national and international research awards, among them the prestigious 1990 “ICAAC Young Investigator Award” for excellence in research in the broad areas of microbiology and infectious diseases from the American Society for Microbiology (http://lib.guides.umbc.edu/c.php?g=836720&p=6575719). He has also been awarded the degree of ‘Doctor Honoris Causa’ from the Faculty of Health Sciences - School of Medicine, University of Patras, Patras, Greece (2013). He is an Honorary Member from Abroad (Membrii de Onoare din Străinătate; https://www.adsm.ro/membrii-de-onoare-straini/) of the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences (Academia de Ştiinţe Medicale, ASM; elected on 2022). His research interests include the study of signal transduction to transcription factors in cell differentiation, tumorigenesis and certain disease pathobiologies.
